Fix: Thunderbird Not Receiving Emails — 7 Solutions
Updated March 2026 · 8 min read
If Thunderbird stopped downloading new messages, you're not alone — it's one of the most common issues users encounter. The cause is usually one of a handful of things. Work through these fixes in order.
Fix 1: Check Your Internet Connection
This sounds obvious, but a dropped Wi-Fi connection or VPN issue can silently block Thunderbird from reaching the mail server. Try loading a webpage to confirm your connection is working. If you're on a VPN, try disconnecting it temporarily.
Fix 2: Check if the Mail Server is Down
Log into your email account via webmail (e.g., mail.google.com, outlook.com). If new messages appear there but not in Thunderbird, the server is fine and the problem is in your Thunderbird configuration.
Fix 3: Force a Manual Check
Go to File → Get New Messages for All Accounts (or press Ctrl+Shift+T). If this triggers a password prompt, your stored password may have expired — re-enter your current password.
Fix 4: Check Account Server Settings
Go to Account Settings → Server Settings for your account. Verify:
- Server name is correct (e.g., imap.gmail.com for Gmail)
- Port is correct (993 for IMAP SSL, 143 for IMAP STARTTLS)
- Connection security is set to SSL/TLS or STARTTLS
- Authentication method is correct (OAuth2 for Gmail/Outlook)
Fix 5: Gmail-Specific Fix — Enable IMAP in Google
For Gmail accounts, IMAP must be enabled in Google settings. Log into Gmail → Settings → See all settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP → Enable IMAP. Also check that "Less secure app access" isn't blocking Thunderbird if you're not using OAuth2.
Fix 6: Re-enter Your Password
If your email provider recently changed its authentication requirements, Thunderbird may be trying to log in with an outdated password or token. Go to Tools → Saved Passwords, find your account, delete the saved password, then trigger a manual check and re-enter your credentials.
Fix 7: Disable Antivirus Email Scanning
Some antivirus programs scan incoming emails and can block or interfere with Thunderbird's connection. Temporarily disable your antivirus's email scanning feature and try getting new messages. If that fixes it, add Thunderbird to your antivirus's exception list.
Still Not Working?
If none of the above works, try creating a new profile in Thunderbird (Help → Troubleshooting Information → Open Profile Folder) and adding your account fresh. A corrupted profile can cause persistent sync failures.
